Until the people who write feedreaders get off their collective ass and manage to stumble across USENET and killfiles, I can only dream of the day that posts to BoingBoing with the following conditions will be deleted automatically:

  • "BoingBoing friend" or "former guestblogger"
  • "I will be reading from my new" or "was nominated"
  • "ukulele"
  • "Disneyland" or "Disneyworld" or "Mickey Mouse" or "fellated the corpse of Walt Disney again"
  • "I'm selling"
  • "but our children were carried off by giant island beetles"
  • ("RIAA" or "MPAA" or "DRM" or "copyright") and ("fascist" or "Nazi")
  • "flashmob" or "moblog" or "nano" or "cyber" or "blogged" or... Oh, Jesus, it's just easier to delete every other post, isn't it?
  • "Xeni Jardin"

Cory Doctorow added:

Er, why don't you just filter the RSS? It's pretty straightforward. I write BB mostly for myself and secondarily for my friends and my family, who're very happy to hear about noms and the like. If you're not interested in that stuff, we make it pretty easy to filter, publishing full-post Atom and RSS with authors. I've never really understood the "That person's personal site contains things I don't like" complaint. Of course it contains things you don't like. We don't write it for you.

Dirk Futura added:

Wait. Hold on. You and your team of journalist friends don't write Boing Boing for a wider audience than your friends and families? REALLY? Are you sure about that?

Personally, I've never understood the whole "we don't write it for you" thing.

adam added:

" I write BB mostly for myself and secondarily for my friends and my family."

This isn't hard to believe. Really, it's the only way to blog. There's a new newsreader out for OS X which offers email-style item filtering which would work well for the Xeniphobic among us.

Ponyboy added:

Aw, lighten up, Cory. If you can't laugh at yourself, well, that's why we're here.

Consider it a compliment that BoingBoing is worth it, despite the whole Disney thing.

Scott Reynen added:

here's an RSS filter i made, which you could pretty easily use to do what you described:

http://weblog.randomchaos.com/rssfilter.php

you can take the URL that makes and feed it back in to do multiple filters.

Mike Frisco added:

Oh man. This was my favorite:
"I will be reading from my new" or "was nominated"

You forgot "I will be on a panel of" and "I was just interviewed for"

moralee added:

I have been working on a piece about the blogworld l337, haha, after geral mcBoingBoing was getting on my nerves. They're the only ones I've had to cancel the "breaking news" popup from SharpReader and I never quite understood the need for so much feed.

Nor did I get the hype, but after seeing their names everywhere, it wasn't hard to see who are amongst the leaders of the pack. There is indeed a pecking order.

I can understand the writing for oneself part, I do that, too, but I'm small futebols when it comes to them and others in their claque. I'm a loner and prefer it that way.

But for the others, Write on! Liberdade de expressão!

This is so high school.

Bill added:

Cory writes for himself? I can believe this after trying to read his book. I'm sure his family and friends are proud of him.

Jacob Martin added:

LMAO

Bill added:

He writes for who? Cory's latest post on Boing Boing, a directory of wonderful things...about him, by him.

Another chance to have Cory's books signed and shipped to your door
Back when I lived in San Francisco, the nice people at Borderlands Books did this super-cool thing where they'd take orders for my books, along with details for personal inscriptions, then get me to sign them when I dropped round the store, and ship them for free within the US (and for a modest fee elsewhere).

Of course, that became a lot less practical last winter, when I moved to London. But you've got another chance to get a signed, inscribed book shipped right to your door: I'm swinging briefly through SF in June (and I do mean *briefly* -- sorry, no time to socialize) and I'm gonna stop by Borderlands and sign any stock that they have. If you get your order in before June 15, I'll sign your copy that week and you'll have it before July 1 -- pretty cool!

Borderlands' contact info is

866 Valencia St.
San Francisco CA 94110 USA
415 824-8203
888 893-4008

Call or email them with your order and payment details and they'll get you sorted out.

Here's another idea. If you don't like boing-boing, don't effing read it. Jumping Jeeziz on a Pogo stick... what a bunch of jealous haters.

The original post was funny, but for f*cks sake, what would all the bored cube dwellers have to read -- and, dare I say, what would your snarky ass have to write about -- if it wasn't for the boingboings of the world?

chris added:

yawn...

for those truly interested in reading empty and miscellaneous writing to pass the time, there's always the old standby of drudge. ya don' like it? don' read it.

Developing...

Joe Clark added:

Oh, Cory, please. Cut the crap, willyez? A Weblog written for yourself and your family doesn't have to beg for help with its bandwidth, mentioning Boing Boing's "award-winning" status en passant:

http://boingboing.net/2004/04/05/boing_boings_explosi.html

You're the last person from whom we'd believe "We're just folks" schtick.

Charles added:

Scott -
your script doesn't seem to be working. It's a fantastic idea, though. I hope someone does figure out how to filter RSS feeds. I use Bloglines, which doesn't seem to have this functionality yet.

tim added:

100% Reconstituted bOINGbOING: http://dialedin.us/boing

inspired by your post (and cory's response), i put this together. seems to be working ok. filters using GET, so you can 'save' your settings in a bookmark.
