The L.A. Times takes a trip north to detail the city by the bay's reemergence into the restaurant scene. After the dot-bomb blow-out and the 9/11 travel embargo, big-name restaurants all over San Francisco folded like one big house of cards.

Now, in their place, tiny neighborhood wonders are popping up all over the place, thrilling foodies with odd specialties (i.e. the all-tartare restaurant, cleverly named Tartare) and sliver culinary regions (A16 in the Marina features Italian cooking via Campania) served on small plates to offer lots of different and distinct tastes in one meal.
