Forget the crap about blue states vs. red states in terms of voting. Check out this map, which shows change in unemployment rate since March of 2001. The states showing red have higher unemployment now, the three blue ones have more jobs, and one state is unchanged. (ignore the number of electoral votes in each state, which are meaningless when discussing employment)

But just last month, Bush went on record saying:

"The economy is strong. It is getting stronger. The tax relief we passed is working."

Look at the map again, and count the states with worse unemployment. I guess this is another one of those "say it enough times and people might actually be fooled into thinking it was true" things. We've heard similar statements about the bang-up job Rummy is doing, the perfect execution of the Iraq war, and the wonderful work of the CIA under Tenet.
