People are being attacked by sharks along the Texas border because farmers use nitrates in the Mississippi watershed. Isn't nature funny?
Nitrates are used in fertilizer and they end up in the Mississippi river and, eventually, in the Gulf of Mexico. The nitrates feed algae blooms that use up all the oxygen in the water, killing anything that can't move out of this Dead Zone, and driving anything that can--like sharks--away from the 5,800 square miles of oxygen-free water. The sharks lose their feeding grounds and look for something (or someone) else to eat. Voila!
