The International Gymnatics Federation is asking the U.S. Olympic Commitee to ask Paul Hamm to reliquish his gold medal as a show of sportsmanship because their judges mistakenly underscored South Korea's Yang Tae-young by 1/10 of a point, or else we would have heard the South Korean national anthem instead of the Star Spangled Banner.

Hamm isn't commenting, although he previously said the only way he'd give up the medal was if the Federation ordered him to. The International Olympic Committee already said that the judging would stand.

The USOC says the matter is closed and considers the move a last-ditch effort by the FIG to have someone else clean up the mess they've made.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that he has absolutely no reason to give back the medal - see http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/olympics/2004/writers/08/23/swift.gym/index.html especially the part ath the end.
