Steve Kurtz had no idea he was going to end up an enemy of the state when his wife died suddenly of a heart attack. He called the police, and when they became suspicious of his art supplies, they brought in the FBI. Within hours he was being detained as a suspected bioterrorist, and continues to be held under suspsicion even though tests have shown it is not even possible to use his equipment for terrorists acts. Still the FBI insists on mounting a case against the artist, and issued seven subpoenas on Tuesday.

You see, Kurtz is the most dangerous kind of citizen, an artist. Part of the Critical Art Ensemble, he and his collaborators make art that address the politics of biotechnology, in this case food products. See CAE Defense Fund for more details.

Ed added:

I heard about that case. How odd. Weren’t the charges dropped? Maybe I’m mistaken

Blue Steele added:

The charges were dropped, he was sent home, but his equipment and art was retained. As of June 8, the FBI has subpoenaed his coworkers and is once again trying to mount a case against him as a bioterrorist perhaps tosave face. They continue to investigate and hold most of his personal effects, art projects, and contents of his home as “evidence.”
