A letter from prudish Irish writer James Joyce to his wife, in which he calls her a “wild-eyed whore” was bought by an anonymous bidder for £240,800, setting a new record for a 2oth Century autographed letter.

Joyce’s “ungovernable lust” for his wife is further revealed in such interesting passages as “I want to dip you in marshmallow fluff and lick it off your lips, and I’m not talking the ones on your mouth, baby. Uh uh. Nope. Get me?” and “All I could think about while I was gone is how much wanton fucking we’re going to be doing. As a matter of fact, get the pony ready and shave the dog. Daddy’s got wood that needs repeated gnawing. No shit.”
