This one is hard to swallow for someone like me, since I remember seeing it in a theatre as a child. 40 years ago this Memorial Day Weekend, “The Sound of Music” premiered to packed houses and went on to become the third highest grossing blockbuster (inflations-adjusted) in the history of film, after “Gone With The Wind” and “Star Wars: Episode IV: A New Hope: in 3D: Special Director’s Cut: Now With More Bantha!”
When the film came out, critics hated it. Pauline Kael lost her job after her pan was published in McCall’s, and The New York Herald Tribune called it “not only too sweet for words but almost too sweet for music.” Today it’s being shown in Rocky Horror-style sing-alongs and remains on the Billboard list of bestselling videos 300 weeks after it was initially released on VHS.
