Spain has a new attraction for us gays. In addition to Barcelona’s beautiful population and the dance mecca Ibiza, gay couples will soon be able to legally wed following the approval of a law legalizing homosexual marriages.
The Catholic church is in a tizzy, naturally, saying this is another nail in the coffin of socirty, but a majority of the Spanish population supports the law. A portion of the bill even supports child adoption by gay couples.
Meanwhile, here in Bibleland, the House failed to pass yet another Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in the United States. The vote was 227 to 186 in favor of the ban, but that was still 49 short of the two-thirds majority necessary.
The vote was seen, like the Senate vote in July, as a tool of the Republicans to label Democrats who voted against it as pro-gay, anti-Bible zealots intent on dismantling everything sacred and true.
Hello from Spain.
Just a little point: the bill doesn’t say anything about child adoption. Indeed, it will be allowed because the current adoption law just mentions “marriage”, no matter who are its components.
Anyway, in practice, homosexual marriages won’t be able to adopt children unless they are from Spain themselves. Reason: foreign laws explicitly bar homosexual adoption. Moreover, nearly all children adopted in Spain come from abroad (commonly China, Russia and South America) due to the extremely low natality rates here, so it would be quite difficult for homosexual couples to have other one’s children.
It’s a good bill, after all. One thing few people know is that even the conservative party (PP, you know, that former Catholic-prowar-proBush lobby), recently booted off from power, endorses gay marriage (not adoption, though). Something’s moving in Spanish society, for good.
Cheers.

Great news. Here’s hoping that other countries will follow suit.
