The NYTimes’ Nicholas D. Kristof bemoans the increasingly hostile environment for the free press in our United States.
Included in his list of journalists facing prison for not revealing sources: “Jim Taricani, a television reporter for the NBC station in Providence, R.I. Mr. Taricani obtained and broadcast, completely legally, a videotape of a city official as he accepted an envelope full of cash.” For his services, he is being fined $1,000 a day and a hearing on Novemeber 18 to see if he’ll be the one who ends up in jail.
And let us not forget Jon Stewart’s least favorite CNN correspondent, Robert Novak, who leaked the identity of a CIA agent in his newspaper column. While Judith Miller of The New York Times and Matthew Cooper of Time are facing prison for committing no crime, Novak isn’t even being subpoenaed, though no one knows exactly why that is.
