Oh, sure, Evan Williams kept Blogger going before the Google gobble by running the servers out of his own place and getting by without a salary, but you have to hand it to the C.E.O. of ClearContext for using his head to keep his company and still bring in around $100 an hour. How does he do it? Online poker.

Deva Hazarika and his head of operations, Brad Meador, spend 50 hours a week keeping ClearContext afloat, and 10 to 15 hours playing Texas Hold ‘em online to supplement their non-income.

Other start-ups are trying to avoid the VC trap by moving to Belfast or relying on their customers’ goodwill, but gambling by gambling has to be one of the best marriages of online dreams and online reality.
