If you're wondering how the press will manage not to stick its foot in its mouth this year when it announces which candidates have won which states, Wired News has all the details regarding the exit polls, the networks and the lessons learned from the 2000 race.

In short, look for more cautious behavior, a closer scrutiny of the data and cutting the margins a bit heavier than a 4% error rate. ABC, NBC, FoxNews, CNN abd the AP are all in it together this year, forming the National Elections Pool that combines polling data from different sources and hopes to be more accurate and maybe even correct this time around.

It's going to be a long night....
